Today is geshi (夏至) one of nijyushisekki (二十四節季) 24 solar terms. The last one was boshu (芒種) on June 6 and the next one is shosho (小暑) on July 7. Ge shi (夏 至) literally means summer reach, that is the summer solstice. It is the time when the day time is the longest and the night time is the shortest in the Northern Hemisphere (北半球: kita hankyu).
The opposite of geshi is toji (冬至), the winter solstice.
There are distinct four seasons in Japan. Season is kisetsu (季節). Four seasons is shiki (四季). They are shun ka shu to (春夏秋冬). Spring is haru (春), summer is natsu (夏), fall is aki (秋), and winter is fuyu (冬).
Which is your favorite season? I like spring the best.
