四月九日(shigatsu kokonoka): April 9


They say April 9 is daibutsu no hi (大仏の日), Day of the great statue of Buddha. On April 9, 752 there was a memorial service called daibutsu kaigen kuyo (大仏開眼供養). Daibutsu is big Buddha, kaigen is a ceremony to welcome the spirit of the Buddha by drawing the eyes on the statue or picture of the Buddha, and kuyo is a memorial service.

The big statue of the Buddha in Nara (奈良) is called Nara no daibutsu (奈良の大仏) and very famous. It was completed after 10 years' work and set in the Todaiji temple (東大寺) where is one of the UNESCO's World Heritages. The height is 14.7 meters tall.

There are some big statues of the Buddha in Japan. But Nara's is the most famous. The second famous one is that of Kamakura (鎌倉) which is about 13.35 meters tall. (See the piture).

The third famous one is the standing statue of the Buddha in Ushiku (牛久), which is 120 meters tall made in 1993. This is the tallest bronze statue of the Buddha in the world.
