増上寺(zojoji)

There is a famous temple called Zojoji (増上寺) near the Tokyo Tower(東京タワー). It is the main temple of Jodo shu(浄土宗:Pure Land Sect) of Buddhism. It was founded in 1393 and relocated to the present site in 1598 after Ieyasu Tokugawa (徳川家康), founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, entered Edo (江戸) in 1590. It became the family temple of the Tokugawa family. Therefore there are some graves of the Tokugawa shoguns there.
Today I happened to pass the temple. They were having a special memorial service called gyoki(御忌).Gyokiis the memorial service for the anniversary of the Jodo shu founder Honen Shonin's (法然上人) death. He passed away on January 25, 1212 at the age of 80.
Here attached the picture.
