November 3 is a national holiday called bunka no hi (文化の日), Culture Day. There are many events here and there. There was an award ceremony of the Order of Culture (bunka kunsho: 文化勲章) at the Imperial Palace today.
This year 6 people were awarded. Among them Dr. Shinya Yamanaka (山中伸弥) who is a Physiology Nobel Prize laureate and Mr. Yoji Yamada (山田洋次) who is a film director are especially well-known to the public.
