Today is geshi (夏至), one of nijyushisekki (二十四節季), the 24 solar terms. The last one was boshu (芒種) on June 6 and the next one is shosho (小暑) on July 7.
Geshi literally means summer reach, it is the summer solstice.
It was very hot. In most places in Japan it recorded the hottest day of this year. In 399 points out of 900 it went up to more than 30 degrees centigrade, which is called manatsu bi (真夏日), midsummer day. In some places it went up to over 35 degrees centigrade which is called mosho bi (猛暑日), heat wave day.
We are afraid of the heat of this year because of saving energy.
