February 8 is known as harikuyo (針供養), the memorial service for broken needles. It is the day to wish for the improvement of sewing skill by thanking for the broken or rusted needles. They are usually put into either tofu (豆腐), bean curd or konnyaku (こんにゃく), devil's tongue and offered to the shrines. Depends on the place, the service is held on December 8.
Do you have such a service?
