There was an award ceremony of the Japan Academy Prize. Last year when I watched the movie Kokuhaku (告白), confession, I felt this movie will get an award someday for sure. And it became true. That movie got the best film prize and best director prize.
Last fall a Japanese actress Fukatsu Eri (深津絵里) got the best actress award at the Montreal Film Festival. Her movie Akunin (悪人), bad man got the best actor prize, best actress prize, best supporting actor prize, and best supporting actress prize.
