7月18日(shichigatsu jyuhachi nichi): July 18

Today is a national holiday called umi no hi (海の日), Marine day which was established in 1995 and enforced from 1996. At first it was on July 20 but since 2003 it has become the third Monday of July.

Today's biggest news was the victory of Nadeshiko (なでしこ) Japan of Women's World Cup Soccer in Germany. They have become the No.1 of the world. Congratulations!!!!!
In Japan there were so many bad things happened such as earthquakes, tsunami, and nuclear power plant issue. This victory brought the spirit of never-give-up to the people in Tohoku area and encouraged them very much. Players also mentioned that they got the encouragement from people in Tohoku area. This is the best news of today.

We asked the gardeners to come to trim the trees and cut grasses. Two of them came around 7:10 in the morning and worked till 2:40 PM or so.

The third day of the Golden Week. It rained today.
At night I watched the Exhibition of the World Figure Skating Championships 2011 on TV. Not all but some of them. I like to see figure skating, especially exhibitions. They skate freely.

十月八日(jyugatsu yoka): October 8

Today is kanro (寒露), one of nijyushisekki (二十四節気), the 24 solar terms. The last one was shubun (秋分) on Septermber 23 and the next one is soko (霜降) on October 23. Kanro literally means cold dew. It is the time when the dew is about to freeze by the cold.
These days it has been very nice, not hot nor cold, very confortable season.

There was a good news today. The Japanese selected football team won the game over the Argentina team which ranks in the 4th in the world at the International Friendship Match by 1 to 0. This was the first game supervised by the new Director Alberto Zacceroni.

One sixth of the year was over and another month has come. March is san gatsu (三月) in Japanese. Its old name is yayoi (弥生). March is the graduation season. And it is also the end of the fiscal year.

Today the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic was over after 17 days games. After all the team Japan got 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. There was only one gold medal in the last Torino Olympic. So the number of the medals increased but there was no gold medal this time unfortunately.
Which program did you like the best? I liked the figure skating for both men and women, ice dancing, mogul, aerial, and so on.

Today is usui (雨水), one of nijyushisekki (二十四節季), the 24 solar terms. Usui (雨水) literally means rain water. It is a time snow and ice melt and change to rain. It was very cold. When I got up, the field was white with frost. The windshield was frozen again.

Today's big news was the bronze medal of men's figure skating. The hope of Japanese men's skating, Daisuke Takahashi (高橋大輔), 23 years old got the silver medal. Congratulations!!
He had a surgery on the right knee in November 2008 and recovered. The key of the medal was said to depend on the success of quadruple jump. And he tried. This became the first medal of men's figure skating in the Olympics.
